This Year the World AIDS Day theme for 2010 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done. World AIDS Day @ LIT :) - Join the Fight against HIV and Aids by promoting awareness and wearing red to college on December 1st. World AIDS Day - Wednesday 1st December 2010 - This year on World AIDS Day we have Garda Permission to go out onto the streets to hand out red ribbons (the symbol of HIV awareness and AIDS rememberance) and collect much needed funds for our project. If you are interested in helping us out on Wednesday the 1st December please contact us. The more people we can get to help us out the more awareness we can spread. Our plan is to work the traffic during rush hours, near the traffic lights. We need people for 3 shifts:
World AIDS Day Rememberance Service - in St Marys Cathedral, Nicolas Street, Limerick at 8pm on Wednesday 1st December. Nóirín Ni Riain, Eoin and Moley Ó Súlleabháin and Nigel Bridge will bring the soul to the ceremony, we will bring the light. This is the third year we are holding a rememberance service and it is held in St Marys Cathedral with the Reverend Jane Galbraith preciding. It is an open service so anyone can come. There will be an opportunity to remember people who have died from HIV/AIDS related illlness as well as an opportunity to pray for people who are living with HIV. Whether you family, friend, PLWHIV or a concerned citizen...you are welcome. If you would like more information please contact us. You can also contact us through our facebook page by clicking on the 'F' symbol on this page.
Previous Irish AIDS Day (15th June) & World AIDS Day (1st December) Irish AIDS day and World AIDS Day are very important dates on the Red Ribbon Project calendar as it allows us to take time to recognise the rise in new HIV cases every year and to promote the work of our project.
On or around June 15th (IAD) and 1st December (WAD) every year you can find us out on the streets of Limerick city giving out red ribbons. Red ribbons are the universal symbol for HIV and AIDS awareness. They also symbolise recognition of the millions of people worldwide who have died from AIDS related illness.
One of our most well known events is the Red Ribbon Ride Out which started in 2001. Over the years we have had hundreds of bikers riding through the three counties of the mid – west, making noise and being visible.
We are always looking for new ways to reach people and present out message in fun and vibrant ways. If you have an idea for a fun event you would like to do for Red Ribbon Project please contact us.
Other Events We are regularly asked to participate in community health days and community events such as the St. Patricks Day parade. We endeavour to attend every event we can but it is not always possible. Tony and Jennifer volunteer for World AIDS Day 2008 at the Regional Hospital, Dooradoyle, Limerick ![]()
The earlier we are invited, the more likely it is we will be able to attend. Examples of events we regularly participate in are:

We like to mark these days with some sort of fun event in celebration of the advances that have been made in medication and in recognition of those who are living long and healthy lives with HIV.
